The Tigers sent shockwaves through the Southern Conference on Saturday with one of the most significant results in the club’s recent history.
Wests Warriors, widely regarded as one of the favourites for the Southern Conference title this year had an unblemished winning record against the Tigers heading into Saturday. It wasn't more than two years ago that they recorded a massive 96-0 win over us, highlighting the remarkable turnaround the club has made!
At the heart of the victory was a sensational performance from Euan Parke, who crossed for a hat-trick of tries amid "the most connected team performance of any Tigers side" that director Rob Ashton has seen. Parke proved a constant threat whenever he had the ball in hand and his three-try haul was a fitting reward for a player who played a crucial role in one of the club’s most memorable wins.
While Parke’s heroics will grab the headlines, the result was built on a collective team effort. Bedford matched Wests physically, defended with determination and took their opportunities when they presented themselves. Against a side expected to challenge for honours this season, the Tigers showed they are capable of competing with the very best teams in the conference.
The victory is also a powerful illustration of the tangible progress Bedford Tigers have made in recent years. The club has worked hard to develop its playing group, strengthen its culture and establish itself as a competitive force within the sport. "Results such as this do not happen by accident; they are the product of sustained effort, commitment and belief."
Perhaps most importantly, the result sends a message to the rest of the league. Bedford Tigers are no longer simply looking to compete — we are demonstrating that we can challenge and defeat the competition’s leading sides.
"It's important that we enjoy the moment but this wasn't our Grand Final", were the words of Head Coach Matt Lambert.
We are at home again next Saturday as we host Brentwood Eels at Putnoe Woods which takes us to the midway point in the competition.
